From the information that I've been reading on these forums, I gather that it is unacceptable to buy gift cards on a credit card. Is this true? I would like to know before I go Christmas shopping. Thanks!

And volume matters too.
Starting in Jan, Wells Fargo says it won't give rewards even on store gift cards, although that is unenforceble in most cases

+1
If you are buying gift cards for gifts, don't let the manufactured spenders Grinch your holiday. If the store sells it to you, go for it.
The MSers are running literally thousands of dollars of gift/cash cards through their credit cards, trying to tweak ways to turn them into cash for a sliver of benefits.
For your few gift cards, no CCC is even going to notice. You will pay fees to get the gift cards, and they are fine with that.

+1. Nothing wrong with buying gift cards with credit cards. Now if your spend on a card goes from 2k a month to 20k a month and its all on gift cards you are likely going to catch your CC issuers attention.
To be honest, I do it all the time now on my Discover.
As an example, they are offering 5% back at departments stores. So what I do is purposely buy a Shell gas gift card for $25-30, maybe some food gift cards, voila!
