As others have mentioned, Amex Delta posts points directly to your SkyMiles account. If they close your card, you still have those points as long as your SkyMiles account stays open.
Also, while issuers can close accounts for inactivity, they generally don't close accounts that have an annual fee. As long as you pay that fee, it's free money for them to keep the account open, regardless of usage.
