Can you close AA and keep miles?

So, I was thinking about this just now.

I've had a Citi AAdvantage card for well over 2 yrs now. I have a AAdvantage account number and it's associated with my card. Out of curiosity, would I be able to hold onto all my AAdvantage miles gained while using my Citi AAdvantage card if I were to close or merge my Citi AAdvantage card. Can I hold a AAdvantage account without having an AAdvantage card? I also have a Delta and United miles account with no Delta or United credit cards....

Thanks!

Yes you can, those miles are now under your airline account.

Re: Can you close AA and keep miles?

You would lose miles only if AA account showed no activity for 18 months. Closing the Citicard won't cause you to forfeit any miles earned.

Re: Can you close AA and keep miles?

The easiest way too keep your AA miles from expiring after 18 months is to register one of your remaining credit cards with the AA dining program and occasionally eat at one of the participating restaurants and using that card to pay.

Re: Can you close AA and keep miles?

OP have you considered product changing your AAdvantage card to the MileUp Card? This can contribute AA miles, gets two miles on groceries and has no AF. Does not have the same benefits of the AF AA card, but earning two miles on groceries now and then is nice.

Yes you keep the miles you already earned. If you have recent activity on the AA card where you have not receieved your miles yet then I am not sure but you may not get those remaining miles if you close the card before they post, but any AA miles in your account at the time of closure of the card will remain in your AA account.
