Canceling Wifes Cap1 secured card questions

My wife has a Cap1 Platnum secured credit card with a $200 limit in which she loaded herself on Oct / 24 / 2015.

She has never received any type of credit increase on the card and wants to get rid of it because she is wanting

to get an unsecured card.

She has no use for the card anymore and wants her $200 back.

She is listed as an AU on my Lowes card which is older that the secured Cap1 and is also a AU on my CU Mastercard

which is also older that the Cap1 card.

She wants to obtain a Discover it card and be done with the Cap1.

I recommended for her to apply and get approved for the Discover it and then to cancel the Cap1 card in that order.

Does anyone agree with this decision as I have recommended to her to get rid of the card and move on ?

Thanks for any help on this matter.

I agree, apply first to replace the card and then close the Cap1

Yes. Apply for the new card first and then cancel the old card. Just incase she gets declined, at least she still has a card open and reporting while she looks for a new one. Better safe than sorry.

Thats what I figured !

She def needs at least one of her own cards reporting.

The AU cards are helping her score, but she wants one on her own.

She has both Discover it and Amex revolver offers at the moment.

Does she use the card at all?

Not really.

She uses it every now and then to show use, that's about it.

It's not doing her any good at this point,

.

She just wants to move up in the food chain.

Re: Canceling Wifes Cap1 secured card questions

I got a $300 secured, $99 deposit with Cap1 Nov 2014.

They gave me the whole $200 credit steps increase and that was it.

They won't unsecure it.

I also got a QS1 a month later for $500 and got a $250 credit steps increase and a $100 sp request I asked for a couple months ago.

Def stuck in the lower tier with no room to grow regardless if I had $200,000 income and no debt.

It's sad that they want you to apply for a diff card instead of building history. Once my cards are paid off, it's goodbye to Cap1 and I will not recommend them.

As always, YMMV.

Her scores are in the 650 range.
Soon to be updated in a couple days with about a 60 point boost after ulilization is reported down.

I would wait until her Util% drops, her score goes up, and then have her call C1 and ask for a PC to quicksilver. That way you have a semi-usable card staying open with an older start date which is better for her score right now.
