Aye, If she can think of credit cards as a different way of spending the money she already has she will be alright.  Unfortunately most of us dont think of it that way at 18, so perhaps a low limit Capital One card is a good starter card.  Also make sure she knows that Capital One will sue you over two dollars! Still no update on my niece getting approved or denied for this card it seems like Capital One's Identity department is very slow. She faxed them her information a week from today an still no answer. She was told sometime it takes up to 3 weeks to verify the info an continue to process the application.

Everything could be moving slowly due to the holidays. Hopefully she'll hear something back after the new year! If not I would suggest calling and making sure that they received all documentation, etc.
