I feel like I had this back in 1999 on a BoA or Citi card. I can't understand why it's not more widespread now. I guess not enough people had been burnt by companies doing T&C buried auto-renewals.

With AMEX they allow you the option to stop those renewals with a phone call to customer service now. But I have to admit virtual card numbers are much more convenient and like you wish they were universally used.
