Should I be concerned that they randomly did this without my asking?

Well, I wouldn't be concerned since I would think the Freedom card is a much more useful card.
the same thing happened to me last month. I just went with it. I don't really use it, but at least it is now a rewards card.
I think Chase did you a favor. There's no special value to the Slate once its new card perks have expired.

Several years ago, I think soon after Chase started the 5/24 rule, I went ahead and PC'd my useless Slate card to the recently created Freedom Unlimited. Ever since, it's been one of my most popular cards. No SUB, but I'd never have gotten to the CFU otherwise.
@10022016 Congrats on you auto-upgrade . . . there should be no concern but rather CELEBRATION . . . that's awesome!!!
Is the new card the Freedom or Freedom Flex? Looks like the Slate has been replaced by the Slate Edge, so if Chase just wanted to replace "legacy" cards with current ones they could have give the (fairly useless) Slate Edge. So certainly either F, or FF is much more useful!
I would have wanted the opportunity to apply and get a SUB instead but that's just me.
There is nothing stopping them from applying for CFU in the future. They didn't get the SUB so "rules" aren't in place

Well that's good.
