Hi guys, I’m planning on accruing AAdvantage miles in the upcoming year and have two cards on my mind that I’d like to get. One is the Barclays Aviator Red (60k bonus) and the Citi AAdvantage platinum select (50k bonus)-I understand there’s really no point getting both cards aside from their sign up bonuses.
Barclays and Citi are both considered to be strict in terms of approvals, can you guys provide some data points for these cards? I don’t want to waste HPs by being too ambitious. As always, your opinions and info are always appreciated!! 😁
Here’s my current situation:
EX FICO- 751 (5 Inqs)
TU FICO- 740 (1 Inq)
EQ CK- 760 (0 Inqs)
Amex BCE- 4k
Amex ED- 10k
Amex Gold- NPSL
CFU- 10.6k
CSR- 10k
BoA Cash Rewards- 3.5k
Oldest account: 1 year 6months
Newest account: 5 months
Utilization: 1%
That 18 month age of oldest account could hurt a bit with Barclays; I had a similar age of oldest account when I reconned for my Uber. That said, since their card is points after first purchase, you may not care if you get a high CL with them if you're using Citi AAdvantage to purchase your tickets, etc.
Platinum Select was 60k not long ago...possibly for additional spending. You may be able to find a still-valid link for 60k - maybe more. I've heard of 75k but never looked into it.
I had a fairly similar profile when I got Platinum Select in Jan 2016...oldest account from late 2013, similar scores with 6 or 7 inquiries on EX. Also got a EQ pull (maybe 1 inquiry).
TU 754 for Aviator Red (6 months ago). No TU inquiries.
I got my Sallie Mae (discontinued Barclays product) in 2014 with 9 months of total history. Maybe they want more history now, but that was supposedly their toughest card at the time.
Ditto on the Citi Platinum Select, I was approved with a similar profile. So you should be golden with them. Barclay's on the other hand can seem touchy from what i've read. So if you're close to the 6/24, or ven have any accounts under 6MO. You might wait a bit, but you can never really know until you try. If you do plan to get both I'd app for the Aviator Red first, as Citi is a little more forgiving in that regard.
Also, if you're not in a hurry I would wait for the 60K SUB on Citi.
Barclay's is only 6/24 on their Arrival+ card.
Citi Platinum I got 75k on 60k promo then once approved and card obtained sent private message by website asking for 75k match and got it.'
Have had both Barclay's Aviator red card, Citi AA Card and also have Barclay's business AA card and I have something like 30/24 so all profile specific.
If I was to choose Barclay's is easier to obtain although with OP's profile either should pretty much be easy from him/her imo.

I wasn't 100% sure about the 6/24 I had only read it in passing and had seen a few posts on here in regards to it. Thanks for pointing out it is only for the arrival+
The red Aviator is a good option for a huge boost to your AA miles, in that it only takes a one time purchase plus the AF to get those miles, where it falls short is the miles earned through daily use compared to the Citi card, not by much. To some though it makes a difference.
Either way with the DP's you have provided I think you will be ok with whichever version you choose.

profiles all vary keep in mind along with how lenders uw work or evolve, but got business AA from barclay's about 6 months back and had to do a bit of explaining on my 30ish accounts in two years, but really wasn't to bad as have had a long relationship with them across 6+ cards, etc. I honestly don't think you will have a problem though if it isnt an instant approval. I doubt they have changed in the 6 months since I have gotten my last card with them and the business side is probably a bit more strict as well so I had more to overcome? Best of luck if you try!
No reason not to get them both.
If it were me I'd do barclays first and then save the citi AA card for later. Barclays is harder to get than citi.
