But isn't it super easy to max out a custom cash category like dining or groceries every month?

For some, yes; but since I live alone, I more than likely won't. The only way I can see me hitting the max of $500 is when shopping at Walmart, which, depending on the location I go to, will be coded as "groceries".

With me I could easily max out the dining category but then I'd have to deal with keeping track of how close I am to hitting the monthly limit and then would have to switch to my freedom unlimited to get 3% on dining after that. I'm still debating if that work is worth it to me.

If you do the math... additional 2% CB on $500 of dining spend so an extra $10/month. Some CB fiends would go for that, but YMMV

That's exactly right and since I love dining I already spend more than that per month on it so I'd easily max it out and get $10 more per month plus the $200 SUB so I am debating whether to get the card or not. That's literally the only thing I'd use it for but I love my freedom unlimited a lot as it is. It's very convenient for me to use chase because my bank accounts and mortgage are with them as well. I have no relationship with citi nor would I bank with them as here in Utah I've never seen a citi branch. It's mostly just chase and wells fargo here with the occasional US Bank and the local CUs

And probably just a little bit less, unless OP plans to try to charge exactly $500 before switching to the Chase card (e.g. charging a bill when close to the limit to two credit cards)  Otherwise the 5% will cover a little bit less than $500, or some of the "final" charge on the card will get 1%

I was thinking about that too. If I get a 2% card like citi double cash or paypal I'm probably getting half that per month at most since the freedom unlimited gives me 1.5% on non category spend. Psychologically 2% on everything is awesome but with my FU, target, and amazon cards I would probably benefit no more than $5 extra per month if I had 2% for non category spend rather than 1.5%
