Credit Limit Observation

Perhaps this should just go in the general credit topics section, but one thing I notice alot on here is people reporting CLs like $2700, $3800, $10,300.  I have never had a card that had a limit like that.  I may have had some $750 limits starting out, but once it got above $1000, it was always in $500 increments.  All of my CLIs have been auto.  I wonder if that is the reason.  Or do people get auto CLIs to these kind of limits also?  Not really important, just didn't jive with my experience on any credit card I've had so I found it odd.

Re: Credit Limit Observation

My Citi Platinum Select Dividend Card started out with a $8,300 CL. Then got a CLI to $12,300.

My Wifes Citi Platinum Select card was the same. It started out with a $8,300 CL. Her Discover More card started out with a $1,700CL.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason behind the odd CL's, or if there is some odd algorithm banks use to calculate them.

I would agree with you except when it comes to Chase.  For some reason all my unsolicited CLIs from Chase come in odd increments.  I just got a $1700 CLI which brings me up to $6350.

All other banks, though, have been in logical increments.

Re: Credit Limit Observation

My HSBC 2% Mastercard started with a credit limit of $320 and now sits at $420...

JARED started me off at $1300 and bumped me up to $1900...

JCPenney started me off at $150 and then bumped me up to $700, then $1200 and now the limit is at $1700..

Re: Credit Limit Observation

My experience is that this occurs because the increases are a percentage of your available line, not a flat amount.

Re: Credit Limit Observation

I've got all types of crazy limits! My Discover started at $5490 and I asked for the $10 to make it even and they denied. So 3 years later, it sits at $9890. An odd amount. My Home Depot started at $4000 and auto'd all the way up to $11,840. Macy's, when they reported, approved for $700 and GLI'd up to $3200. Weird numbers might be common now though my cards over 10K are in $500 increments.

Re: Credit Limit Observation

My Discover was opened at $1500...I received a $300 and $500 CLI taking me to $1800 then $2300.  Before they "kindly" decided to give me a CLD to a more round CLof $500.

Re: Credit Limit Observation

Chase has always been in even increments for me.

My opening line in 2003 was $6000, that got bumped to $9,500 in 2008, and last year was bumped to $12,500.

I have had odd ones before though: Amex Blue was $12,200, then CLD to $6,400 during the mess in 2008, then CLId to $12,500 last year.

Alliant made it easy and gave me $15k flat.

Oh and Home Depot went from $6,200 to $7,400.

My Discover was approved at $2500 in 2009.  I received a CLI to $3600 to $4600.  I wonder why I haven't gone to further.
