Current Amex rules about card caps?

My Amex cards:

1 personal charge card

3 personal revolvers

1 small business revolver

What are Amex's current rules about a limit on the number of cards? Are they fairly consistent or very YMMV?

I may get a Delta card in the future (personal or business, either is possible), and if there's a good chance the app would be rejected due to my having too many cards, I might close my BCE in advance.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

The only true "hard cap" I'm aware of is the 5 card limit with regards to their regular credit card on the revolver side. Charge cards still aren't counted towards that limit at so you could conceivably get all 6 (?) charge cards and still have room to get 5 other cards that you wanted. Supposedly there were reports of people being able to get that ellusive 6th credit card with datapoints on reddit so take that as you will.

You were at the 5 card revolver limit with the two Hiltons, SPG, Delta, and ED.

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

I believe it's 5 or 6 revolvers depending on profile (person and business counted together) and unlimited charge cards (suitable profile of course)
PERSONAL; Amex | AOD FCU | BBVA | BECU | Capital 1 | Chase | Citi | Discover | Key | NFCU | PSECU | SECU MD | Synchrony | US Bank
BUSINESS; Amex | Citi
F8 Current F8s ~750 Best Ever F8s ~775
TOTAL PERSONAL CL > $350k and TCL > $365k

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

I just activated my sixth AMEX card today:

  • Green Card (recently voluntarily downgraded from Premier Rewards Gold)
  • Hilton Honors
  • Blue Cash Preferred (I love getting 6% back on groceries!)
  • Amex Everyday
  • Gold Delta Skymiles
  • Cash Magnet (with 0.00% interest through billing cycle of January, 2020)

And with this latest Cash Magnet - I think that I am set with American Express!

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

5 is a SOFT RULE. There are a number of people here with 6 revolvers that weren't included in the Hilton change over.

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

I understand that and I'm part of those people with six revolvers and two charge cards however even if it's not a hard rule I don't think it qualifies for a SOFT rule at best you can say less than 10% of people have bypassed the five revolvers rule. I am just trying to set an expectation for OP. Do you have data points on people with six cards none of them came from Hilton Citi change ?

Re: Current Amex rules about card caps?

Thanks! So a 5th revolver is quite possible.
