AU are not responsible for charges so if that is on the AU credit report they should simply dispute it as not their account and it will be deleted instantly.
They should have no issue applying for their own Discover if they have good enough credit to get it.
However, blacklists and reports are two different things.

guilty by association? I would agree with you though on principle, whether a lender sees it that way we never can know unless you work for them.
