It is not working for me at FoodMaxx (several other myFICO members also reported the same thing). Ended up using AMEX BCE w/Apple Pay at Foodmaxx.
It is working at Chevron though.
So far I have tried it at Whole Foods and Firehouse Subs using my Apple Watch + iPhone 5s.
Whole Foods: FAIL I tried it about 10 days since the promotion started. 2-3 attempts each day. No luck. Using my actual Discover card at this Whole Foods works fine, as does using any other card on my Apple Pay. Only the combination of the two fails. I see the check mark on the watch, but the register does not complete the payment.
Firehouse Subs: SUCCESS. Used it twice so far, worked both times on first attempt.
The most frustrating thing is that when it doesn't work, who can you get to do anything about it?
Certainly not the cashier, who is just there to ring you up and move on to the next customer. Neither Discover nor Apple seem to be taking ownership of the failures. Maybe I'll try contacting the Whole Foods management to see what they can figure out.
Thanks for the feedback!
I had tried it at a gas station while traveling in Upstate New York and a Whole Foods in Louisiana. Discover said there is a widespread issue, but that it is getting better (when I called them today). They said try it again and to call them with any instances it doesn't work so they can correct it.
I am hoping they maybe will give the 10% cashback bonus in these cases since we are trying to use it, and they have acknowledged an issue on their end.'
They did also suggest to delete the card and re-add it to the phone. I will give it a few more shots and report back.
@Anonymous wrote:For me, it's hit or miss. I'm actually headed to Walgreens to try again, but I tried it the other night at The Fresh Market and it was a no-go. Super embarrassing.
Fully agree here! Can you let me know about Walgreens? That is the other place I frequently use Apple Pay and am curious to see how it goes for you today.
Fingers crossed that it is fixed (or at least much improved) after speaking with them today.
I always reload my starbucks using the app on iphone. Discover apple pay doesnt work for in app payment. I called the CSR and he confirmed it wont work. Besides this i have no problem to use it in-store payment at walgreens

I did already try that, and it did not resolve the Whole Foods issue for me.
Gas is running low so I will probably try it next at Chevron today or tomorrow. May also try another Whole Foods in town to see if I can get it working there.
When I heard about the 10% promo, I suspected this might be a problem - I daresay the 10% promo is even partially to try and convince merchants to fix their systems. See, it's not as simple as accepting a card brand and accepting contactless. The merchant's system also has to accept that card brand as contactless - the AID has to be setup for contactless, and if using EMV mode it's a seperate certification (if using magstripe mode it is easier).
Here in the UK, MANY places take Amex cards, and take contactless, but don't take Amex contactless. That was even an issue in the US when I left. Oddly, they WOULD often take Amex Apple Pay. This is because, at least in the US, Amex Apple Pay is/was missing the data needed for EMV, forcing terminals to use magstripe mode. Since this is simpler, it'd often work even if the terminal wasn't truly setup for Amex contactless.
This will all get better in time. Think about it - why would a US merchant have bothered setting up D-PAS contactless until the Apple Pay Discover announcement a few months ago? Discover hasn't issued a contactless card in the US in years.

Essentially, Discover is paying us to be their field testers.
Except we only get paid when the system works.
getting declined at whole foods because they didn't update the system is NOT FUN!
@Anonymous wrote:Has anyone had any luck? I have tried the watch and 2 phones, but transactions don't go through at all. I end up having to use my card, which defeats the purpose of getting the bonus. Discover never sees the Apple Pay attempts and it happens at any retailer. Discover is claiming it is broken for everyone, but I would think that this news would be all over the Internet.
Any help would be great, as I want to make sure I am not the only one.
I've successfully used mine at McDonalds and The Disney Store. Did not work at Macy's.
