Hello all, long time lurker here; I am looking for some help with a CLI with Discover. I've read several posts and there is not a ton of consistent information on Discover (this may be the answer to my question). I have had the card for 6 months now and have been denied two CLIs for not enough account history (one at 3 month statement and one at 6 month statement). While I get what this means, is there anyway to help this out? Discover limit = 4K; putting $2000+ a month minimum spend on it (PIF every month). This can increase as they did 5% on Amazon this quarter.
Other DP:
Cards: BCE: $48,500 / CCR: $25,000 / CSP: $33,500 / Chase Prime: $23,500 / WF Active Cash: $20,000
Util = 2% simply because I have a 0% left on the BCE until 01/2024
Income = 160K
What am I missing here? Never had a CLD nor been denied a CLI with any of the above cards. No derogs. Do I need to let a balance report for Discover? Do they care that my TCL is practically the same as income already? Thanks!

I've come to the conclusion that trying to understand Discover's CLI "policy" is an exercise in futility. There are so many theories out there as to what Discover is looking for. But none of the theories actually work. The only thing I can detect that has any degree of consistency is that one's chances are better if one's FICO scores are > 720.

Discover FICO Score is showing 780.
Discover is consistently inconsistent.
Some people who have sockdrawered the card for quite a while are successful with CLIs, some people (like me) get nada without having recently put substantial spend and even then it's hit-or-miss. Sounds like you're also in the latter category. :-(
You've got another 6 months with the card earning 2% unstructured and 10% on bonus categories, so at least you have incentive to keep using the card at least for the short term.

I said it improves your chances, not that it will get you a CLI ![]()
My actual working theory, which I've mentioned in this forum before, is that CLI decisions are made at Discover by a room full of monkeys with keyboards.
Your case, a denial of a CLI despite such an excellent credit picture, promising not only reliability plus profitability, tends to support that theory. A lender has to be crazy to deny a request for a CLI on your facts.

I got my first CLI at 7? months and then another one 1-2 months after, so perhaps you just need to reach statement 7 before they'll allow the CLI, even if other factors are permitting. Try every time (you notice Discover's TU pull for the FICO scorecard if you're checking your TU report often) or just whenever you see your FICO scorecard updates on Discover's end
my file and demos looks way more like 'a discover customer' than yours does though (in literally every way)
so perhaps that made it much easier for me to go from $7k to $10k in the first year
agree with above though, enjoy the 10%
and know that if you want to annihilate this card with non-cat spend, that might help, but it might not. depends if you would rather have maximum rewards or your CR look more pretty with higher limits

My personal experience with Discover is as follows,
On 6/25/2021 I got my first Discover IT cb card 3k sl.
I used the BT offer and paid it off in a timely manner.
Then the flood gates opened
They approved my 2nd Discover IT cb 6k sl on 7/10/22
Then the next month starting at month 14 I got 3 cli's' on the first card
8/1/2022 3k - 4500 = 1500 cli
11/22/2022 4500 - 5500 = 1k cli
12/29/2022 5500 - 6500 = 1k cli
It seemed they really liked it when I paid off that BT, ymmv
My first Disco card never got any love (SL $11000.) After 2.5 years of various denials, I decided to app for a 2nd (got $7000.)
I then combined my cards. It stil took another 21 months to get a CLI on the combined card.
I did get two CLIs after paying off some BTs and now sit at $24000.

I've had countless denials for a
Discover CLI. The things I found that worked was getting my first one at 12 months of account history. Then the other thing was charging about $2000 on one of my other cards and then using their balance transfer feature to transfer that balance. I did the 15 month option with $0 transfer fee.
I had read multiple people have success doing a balance transfer then asking for a limit increase, so I figured it was worth a shot. I actually got 3 limit increases of $3000 each over the course of 3 months. I just asked every month for 3 months in a row. In month 4 they said no and so I paid the whole balance off. I was satisfied with the $9000 CLI in 3 months but had to test my luck one more time! Hopefully this helps you!

Discover frustrates me. I've had a Discover IT card since 2015. It was one of my first credit cards and got it initialy with a $500 SL. Every year I request a CLI and denied. All these years later, it's still sitting at $500. My accounts been nothing less that perfect without a single late payment and paid in full every month.
I recently applied for a Discover Miles and got approved for 4K. So, they will give me a new 4K Miles Card but not a CLI from $500 on an account thats 8 years old?
I don't get it.
