Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

I would say one from each of the big five, and include JCB (marukai or mitsuwa) and in that case, no, I don't have one from each ;-)

Kidding. I have one discover, too many Visas, Several MC, and 2 amex.  If one was super worried about network acceptance secured and debit cards cover all of those. I dont care about it much anymore, as costco accpts more payments, sams club offered me credit, and I dont use plastiq enough to worry about .5% by not using the right MC/AMEX they are promoting It seems that checking debit accounts lean toward visas over MC, but Altura CU in So Cal is a MC debit.

Hey Ford Guy, your a member of Altura? You don't here much about them.  What's your experience with them so far?

Altura CU is from Riverside.  I actually had this Visterra Credit Union which merged I chose Visterra because it was a block away from my mom's house. Visterra I believe was a credit union that serve March Air Force Base back when it was March Air Force Base.   then it got closed,  converted to reserve,  the house market went kaput,  it became little South Central and so on.…

Their cc offering are just so so, worse than Barklys ring and their auto loan rates aren't nearly as good as other ones.   I'm currently after a Navy Federal membership which is pretty much Superior in every way.   As thered no fees,  doesn't really hurt to keep it around

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

3 Mastercard, 1 Visa, 1 Discover.

I don't have an Amex because none of their cards interest me, since I don't travel much, and they don't have anything unique in the cashback arena that fills a need for me. I was initially apprehensive about getting a Discover due to concerns about acceptance rate, but finding this to not be an issue, if Amex came out with something that would benefit me, I would apply for it.

However, I don't really see an untapped category that would benefit me. Gas, groceries and Amazon on Sallie Mae, whatever Discover's quarterly category happens to be, and non-category spend on my (hopefully arriving today) Citi DC.

Quicksilver - 16k | Discover It - 34k | Citi DC - $21k | Chase Amazon - 8k | Chase Reserve - 19.5k | Chase Preferred - 5k | EX FICO (Discover CSC) 788

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

I have all four but my reasons started off as being more so for rewards. Now I'm aligning that with benefits that each card provides too, like Warranty Protection, Price Protection, Lost/Stolen items, Trip Protection, Shopping portals, etc. My plan now is to make sure I'm actually fully using and maximizing what each card can do, even down to none bankcard store cards. In other words, I'll be thinning soon.

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

Here's what I've got for diversity: I don't care as much about the network the card uses, but it's nice to have one of each for various offers that come up. (E.g. IHG has had a couple of Mastercard-specific promotions for earning points)

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

In my wallet... And in order of use

Discover: On the first year 12mo 0% and double cashback promo. Has more liberal categories than Chase Freedom

Blispay Visa.... 2% and/or 6mo deferred 0% apr... (got it post-discover so seeing more use)

Chase Freedom.. Visa 15 mo 0% apr and lowest public offered rate for that card...

But the revolver (for any large purchases that need to revolve) award goes to....

Hanscom FCU card (now MC =( =( since I want to use it at Costco.. Grrrh) .. no frills.. just an apr in the mid 8s.. think its 8.45 ...no fee CA, no fee BT,,, and FTF passthrough.. (I.E its the bank rate, and they just pass it to you.. so usually much less than 3% ) **bleep** ugly grey card with no personality, unlike their pre-EMV card... which was actually really attractive...

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

heyryan...

Discover is accepted where JCB or UnionPay logo... theres a caveat with some Unionpay folks refusing to either swipe/run the card or their machine doesn't reconize it... But thats a general card acceptance problem with China and UnionPay in particular...

I think the JCB cards are interesting. but kind of question having them in the states unless you can take advantage and apply for Mitsumi and or Maraki...

Re: Do you have one from each of the Big Four?

Well if you look at my signature you'll see I have every network covered except AMEX, and I don't plan on ever getting one.  I don't see AMEX differentiating themselves in any way from Chase, Citi, or Discover be it the rewards structure or the purchase protection benefits, not to mention the fact that AMEX enjoys the least acceptance of  any of the four networks.  At least Chase and Discover offer their online malls as well as 90 day price protection.  I think AMEX has staked their business model on presitge, and presitge is meaningless for most consumers.

On another note, Visa and Mastercard seem ubiquitous to me.  I've never heard of a place that takes one but not the other, but FWIW it does seem that the lion's share of prime rewards cards are Visa.

I happily carry all. Even if I did no spending on the AMEX BCE (I use it for grocery shopping), AMEX Offers has some good/useful freebies and rebates from time to time. Free ShopRunner ($75 value, although I would never pay for it) has soothed the millenial in me with [near] instant gratification. I have found, so far, that all of the bonus shopping I've tried on the UR portal can utilize the ShopRunner 2 day free shipping. This is a great combo for me. Bonus spending on Chase (4pt/1 bonus from earlier purchase) with free 2 day shipping from AMEX perk. Also currently rocking some free Hulu Plus courtesy of AMEX. Saved $10/mo each on my cell phone and internet bills for a few months with instant rebate offer. And more awesome deals I've made use of as well; and this from a no annual fee card! I hope AMEX steps up their game in their higher end cards and I'll seriously consider.
