Sometimes the categories overlap, but they don't always overlap. Both cards are no AF so wny not have both?

As to the value of the points, I am banking my UR points (probably for a few years) until they build up, then will throw them in with a CSP app to route them to an airline plan.

Discover is fine, you can use the points for some discounts on vendor-specific cards if you are going to use certain car rental or dining chains anyway. The promos from Discover often also include BT offers, which I doubt Chase does at all.

+1 I don't have discover card, but I focus on travel rewards. If your focus is on cash back I don't think these cards are mutually exclusive.

Re: Does Discover trump Freedom?

I'm pretty indifferent, and have both.

If the categories overlap, I'll defer to the Freedom for the potential UR transfers.  However, for those who prefer GC redemptions, I think Discover would be the better choice. Neither gets any use from me aside from the 5% rotating categories.  In essence, the absolute maximum I'd spend on either is $1,500 per quarter.

So, at best, both are peripheral complimentary cards, in my view.

Re: Does Discover trump Freedom?

Personally, I prefer to view the Discover IT and Chase Freedom as complements rather than competitors. They go very well together to either: raise the $1500 cap imposed on both for overlapping 5% rotating categories or to make up for when the other has awful categories. I'd feel as though I was leaving money on the table if I had to choose just one. For example, I have the Sallie Mae + Discover for Amazon his quarter and Sallie Mae + Freedom next quarter. I also have the Citi Dividend's rotating categories to take advantage of.

I will admit that the Discover Deals portals are amazing, irrespective of the double cash back promotion!

Re: Does Discover trump Freedom?

In terms of CLI, Discover wins. My Freedom is still sitting at its SL, whereas I've gotten 3 CLIs with Discover. Discover also started me out with twice the SL as Chase.

Discover trumped Freedom for me which is why I closed it but everyone is different. While I understand those who value Freedom as a compliment to CSP that isnt really a fair comparison in relation to the question being asked. By itself, as a stand alone card, does Discover trump Freedom without factoring other cards into the mix? For me, yes. Categories are generally broader, Discover Deals are pretty sweet and customer service is great.

Actually, the original question was: is there any reason to get the Freedom  Smiley Wink

Those reasons have to include transfer possibilities, which are a feature of the Freedom card, just like any other points card.

Re: Does Discover trump Freedom?

In terms of just cash back, then yes, Discover is a better choice over Freedom. But if you have a CSP (or another card that does transfers), Freedom is more valuable for UR points. It depends what you want out of the card -- if I were to go back and do it again, i'd probably get...

neither to be honest. Smiley Tongue I guess I find the 5% rotating categories to be frustrating (or maybe it's because Freedom's are so limited anyway). I probably should've gotten Discover but was enticed with Freedom's checkings bonus (which was nerfed literally right after I got the card!).

Re: Does Discover trump Freedom?

you guys need to quit with the UR crap. OP was very specific that isn't what they want.

yes discover has more broad categories so it's more widely accepted for your 5%

Everyone needs to make their own choices. Fact is, UR are a consideration in the Freedom decision. If the OP discounts the value of UR points, then OP can make that call and not go for the Freedom.

As for Q3 2015, the only of the two which offers 5% gasoline happens to be Freedom, so having a Freedom this quarter is a benefit that Discover can't match, period.

That's not fair now and I know you pride yourself in giving complete and accurate info

When making an informed decision on any credit product one should have all facts that pertain to the product and you yourself had a thread about bad advice given...Lol

So don't shot me but how about not having all the facts and benefits of a card and making a decision that will be regretted later because no  one told you?

Me nice to me now.....Smiley Very Happy

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?
