what's considered "good income" and does debt factor into the decision?

I have a buddy who works for AMEX and laughed at me when I told him I was going to apply for a Plat card, without being a previous Amex member. Knowing I've had my USAA Amex (sponsored) and my USAA MasterCard with perfect payment history for about five years, and credit scores all above 750, I decided to give it a shot.
Instant approval. I am going to be 24 this August.....
Anyone else shocked to see their Plat approval go through?
John
When I was 24 I could think of a helluva lot of other things to spend $450 on instead of the annual fee for a credit card, but what ever floats your boat!
I couldn't agree more... Unless it was absolutely necessary or my employer was footing the bill (which mine won't as they offer the corporate AmEx), then I would pass on the Platinum card. I guess I'm just one of those people who look at credit/charge cards over the long haul and decide whether the cost of ownership is worth more than having used the money elsewhere. Over ten years this card would cost upwards of $4500 and may not reward the same amount in benefits compared to a card with no AF or a much smaller AF. That $4500 could be used to pay down debt or increase your wealth/retirement accounts which would be worth a lot more come 40 to 50 years from now.
But each person has there reasons for owning specific cards and I'm sure you have a valid reason for wanting/owning the Platinum card. I received the Green card at 20, closed it a year later as I did not benefit much from a charge card with an AF. The first year fee was waived.
+1 for putting things into prespective.
20 when I got Blue Cash and 23 when I got HHonors. The only reason I haven't applied for the Plat is because I'm not going to pay that ridiculous fee, but congrats, if that's what you're looking for.
20 years old when I got my Amex Blue which is said that revolvers are harder to get than charge cards. So going for a Amex Plat at young age sounds more like a status symbol than what it may actually be worth unless you really do use the benefits it provides.
On a side note, I think the mods should create a subtitlel to Credit Cards. Credit Cards and underneath it American Express Cards because of all the Amex posts here. It's like every other post is about Amex lol.
