How does Amex feel about BT for payment?

I have read conflicting stories on here about how Amex feels about being paid by a BT.

I recieved the card in August and made lots of charges on it to meet my sign on points.   I am going to make a payment for 1/2 the balance and would like to BT the other 1/2 to another credit card with a higher CL.

Im applying for a CLI next month (3x) and I don't want to BT the balance if it will affect my CLI chances.

Anyone have any issues with BT and not receiving a CLI?

A BT will not affect your chances at a CLI.  AMEX doesn't care how they're paid

If you can get a balance transfer where the other issuer sends a check for you to deposit, obviously Amex wouldn't have to know.   I don't know how visible it is in the other cases either, Amex just receives a check from, for example, a Citi bank account, with no indication that this is balance transfer

Re: How does Amex feel about BT for payment?

I've come to take most "issuer X in particular likes/dislikes consumer behavior Y" statements with a grain of salt.

Despite the temptation to use data points, true apples-to-apples comparisons are hard to find in adequate number. A lot of the "attitudes" MF may attribute to one particular lender could apply to many/most lenders.

Keep in mind that if you do a direct BT or "secret BT" via a check, Amex can still see you're carrying a balance on another account when they next SP you. That may set off other financial risk concerns unrelated to your doing a BT.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE

Re: How does Amex feel about BT for payment?

All good information. I can further add that we only see it as a regular check payment. Representatives cannot see the details of the check. Only supervisors in customer service and credit can look at the images and only then would we know it was a balance transfer (and we only look at those for payment-related issues). Of course, credit may see the connection of the balance increase on another account during the next credit inquiry as others have said.

Re: How does Amex feel about BT for payment?

I have done a couple direct bal. tran. from my Barclay ring card (a few Ks each time) with no problems. In fact after the last one Amex gave me a promotional APR of 9.99% for 12mo. Guess they would rather get my interest...its close enough to not be worth the trouble of a tran. Well played Amex.

However Discovers offer of 4.99% for 18mo still won in the end.

It's a bank.  Pay them someway, somehow, and they will be happy.

Thanks everyone!

And by the way I plan to pay off the BT credit card that Im using quickly so it won't affect my utilization.   Its another month before my other card reports, so this gives me some time for another few pay checks to pay it with.
