How old one has to be to apply for a credit card

How old does one have to apply for credit card? My daughter 16 1/2 year old is getting pre-approved offers. It is probably due to she being an AU on my accounts with good standing. Do you think she should apply for one of the pre-approved offers? Or the app will be rejected due to her age? She is very responsible kid and I am not worried about her having her own card. I just want to make sure, it would be rejected if she applies for it.

I do not think anything had changed. But it is 18 years of age.

I read the fine print on the back and it says must be 18 years old. I'll send it to shredder. I think I should put her name into opt out list. There is no point in getting all these mails when she is not eligible to apply. Once she is 18 she can opt back in if she wants.

Re: How old one has to be to apply for a credit card

There is a CC collection account on my EQ report from a Citi Card that was opened when I was 17.

I have no idea where it came from, and disputing it got it off TU and EX.  Can I dispute it on EQ and show the reason as "under 18 years old when account was opened?"  Both the DOFD and DOLA are prior to my 18th birthday.

Starting Score: 540 EQ 517 TU on 11/17/08
Current Score: 668 EQ 726 TU
Goal Score: 760 EQ 760 TU

I looked. Both these accounts require co-signer if applicat is under 16. I want her to get some thing with out Co-signer as she already have 3 accounts from me as AU. They are Amex Gold / National City / HSBC Discover.

Re: How old one has to be to apply for a credit card

Congress is currently working on credit card reform which, if passed, would include only allowing adults 21 or older to obtain credit cards:

American Express T&C state that a person can become an AU at age 15, they are issued a unique card number and they may be liable for the charges if the primary card holder does not pay.

Re: How old one has to be to apply for a credit card

Can someone point me to the opt-out list or a thread explaining how to opt-out?

I did a search on the board for 'opt out' and only came up with info about opting-out of myfico, something I definitely don't want to do.

Thanks!
