The first time I applied for an Amex Green (back in the '90s) I got a solid decline, as in I could almost hear them laughing at me through the denial letter for even having the nerve to apply. A few months later, I got a "pre-approved" flier from none other than Amex... for a 'student' version of the Green card. I was working full time (20 yrs old) but still taking a couple of classes, so I thought, "what the heck...".
A few weeks later I got my new card in the mail.
The "moral of the story" is, never give up... and things can change dramatically in a short period of time!
