Pretty sure Gold is free for first year... so you would see it on your 13th statement

Yep.  Gold is free the first year.

Keep an eye on your account, though. They charged me the annual fee on day 2 of having the account. A simple sweet email will get it taken care of. They credited me the fee very very quickly. Got to love Amex CS.
