Well the context was regular Macy's store card which getting upgraded to AMEX version later. If you apply for AMEX one separately it will just be a new account on your credit report. However according to MACY's this upgrade will replace the card number and other info on report however the original history will still be same and won't be reported as a new account. So that is the difference.
