Macy's @#$%^&*

I opened a Macy's store card in 2008 with a $600 limit that was quickly increased to $1,500. After Macy's store cards moved to NPSL, I lost interest in it. Earlier this year, Macy's reinstated limits, so I checked my credit report in July... and saw a Macy's store card with a $100 limit reporting as closed by consumer request.

After a dozen phone calls, I took a hard pull to re-open the account because it is one of my oldest tradelines. They reinstated the original tradeline and account number... with an $800 limit. I called several times after that to try to restore the original $1,500 limit, but I had no success.

This morning I received an alert from CreditKarma that my limit was decreased from $800 again to $100. I called and was transferred to a credit specialist that said she had no record of my card ever being approved for an $800 limit and that my limit had been $100 since 2010. After very calmly and patiently explaining to her the history of the account, she put me on hold for several minutes and transferred me to her supervisor.

The supervisor immediately said she was able to restore the $1,500 limit to the account and placed the correct coding on the account so that it would appear active to the system. She said she had no idea why my account was closed in the first place because it normally takes 3 years of inactivity to close an account, and she also had no explanation why my limit had dropped to $100 again. I explained to her that I had reactivated the account because of its age and because I wanted to use it for Christmas shopping, and she assured me that I should not see another inactivity drop before then.

I was very pleased with the supervisor's ability to restore the original account limit and to explicitly mark the account as active, but this account has been a headache the last few months. The card itself isn't really that important to me, but she had no explanation for why it was lowered again less than 3 months after I re-opened it, and no one has had any explanation why it reported as closed by me. Has anyone else had this much trouble with Macy's?

Re: Macy's @#$%^&*

That was weird. At least your situation was resolved.

When I first opened my Macy's account in 2011...it was NPSL as well. I called in when I had gotten my card because where was no reported limit. They said there was no limit on my card. Then when they started reporting limits again, it was $100! I didn't use my Macy's card a lot so I didn't really care about the limit. I called recently and got my limit raised to $1,000.

As of 2017, rebuilding...

Re: Macy's @#$%^&*

To avoid this situation going forward simply use the card every 3-6 months, even for a small purchase.

Re: Macy's @#$%^&*

Macy's wdie lower your line and close your card way before three years of inactivity. The CSR was speaking nonsense. I think they misunderstood that three years is the time frame that they can grab the old account and reopen. After three years its gone and you start all over.

Unless I misunderstand you had your account closed for inactivity, got it reopened, still didn't use it, and it was closed a second time.

Getting the account reopened doesn't usually count as "activity", so if you find yourself in a similar situation in the future and manage to get an account reopened - take the card out for a spin promptly. A small charge and immediate payment is usually sufficient to restart the inactivity clock.

I actually did use the card after re-opening it, that was why it made no sense.

Called them back today and they said they would have it removed in the next 30 days. In the meantime, Amex made a soft pull the same day for account review, so now U have to hope they don't get spooked by the hard pull.
