It is preference. Some cards have a specific purpose or benefit to having or using them (6-18 months of 0% financing, cash back rewards, free credit scores, discounts, etc.) Others like to just have them. While being approved for a card certainly feels good, I don't think people get cards to just shout to the world that they got 'x' card (but then again people get their satisfaction from different things..).
