Amex BCE was the recent addition to my plastic armor. Was offered a ridiculous 1K limit and when I called them during activation, was told "please call us back in 3 months and it'll be taken care of". Called on 92nd day but denied again (citing too many number of inquiries).
On Friday, it was 5th month completion and tried hitting the luv button. Was again asked to call a number. Called and was told "you cannot re-app within 3 months"....It's really annoying as I was not able to shop decent amounts (150 to 200) as it'd hit high util zone due to 1K limit...Discover upped my limit by 2.5K and was already holding my 10K signature Visa from my FCU.
In the meantime, Cap One was generous and gave 4K increase in two of my cards (2K each)....and converted my MC Platinum to QS. Well, a thought occured - why should I still cling on to the 1K, "you are at our mercy" bank card ? Went on chat today and told the rep to close my card....was asked the reason and I gave the whole story.......and got the card cancelled.
One less Plastic in my Wallet.. ![]()
Next - have high AF and low limit Delta Amex Platinum. Waiting for August to close that too...
Sounds like you and AMEX are not a match made in heaven. Better to learn that now and save yourself future frustrations.
Just gotta say I love the phrase "recent addition to my plastic armor" ![]()
Regardless of creditor your credit profile and income determine the limits that you qualify for. Some may have easier criteria for those with a given profile than others but you'll get better limits with AmEx when your profile improves sufficiently for them.
That said, it's up to you to so what works for your for whatever reasons that matter to you -- whether that's because of the limit you qualified for, the rewards program or any other reason. AmEx has been very useful to me but YMMV as with any card and creditor.

I'm having second thoughts about my BCE because of the $25 increments rule (if you have anywhere between $26-49 worth of reward dollars, you can only redeem $25 since it is in increments of $25). I'm only using it for the promotional offer of 10% off cell phone bills up to 2k, as well as the $100 statement credit after 1k spend. Might not use it afterwards if I'm not successful with Amex's 3x CLI that people keep talking about.
I've benefited $130 over the past 12 months through amex offers. I think the entire time of the card I've only ever taken one $25 redemption but done really well through the offers program. Mostly all stuff I was buying anyway. It is a pretty good card even though it's gets a lot of hate. I like amex and wish the reward profile was more competitive. If/when Sallie gets nerfed it will get a lot more swipes for me at that point. Althought I might app for Citi Costco if Sallie were to get whacked.
I gotta second that. I too hate the $25 increments for redeeming for cash. Why can't everyone be like Discover and Chase and allow reward redemption for any amount!

I would keep my Amex cards solely for the offers. Use them rarely but do use them whenever I like them. Made around $50-$70 off from them.
Looks like the BCE closure is not going to affect my available credit. Got a mail that my Discover Card CLI is up by 1K....probably a coincidence ?

Most of chase cash back cards require 20 minimum. Barclays requires minimums. I find Amex and Sallie Mae useful. I find AARP and Ink useful (both require 20 minimum). If you do not like limit, wait until score over 760 (I did
).
