I feel as though I posted this or something really close to this already, but I'm almost sure I didn't. I have class in the morning and decided Anywho, I'm completely done with apps after just one more.. at least until around Summer. So I ust wanted to see the different types of cards you guys recommend that I apply for.
My scores are listed below, none of them are FICO, but look at them to get an idea, oh and my EXP score is 710. I am a full time student at my local CC for now, and my annual income is about 9k.
My oldest account is a student loan, which is 1 year, 4 months old. My AAoA is 7 months. On TU, I have 12 inquiries which 8 will fall off in the Summer, EQ I have 4 inquiries which 2 will fall off in the Summer, and EX I have 5 inquiries which 3 will fall off in the Summer.
CK rates my credit as 'Fair", and claims I have a fair approval odds at the Discover It for Students.
Any cards you guys honestly think I have a shot at? What are cards that I should just stay away from until I have a longer history? And after picking a card, let me know if you think my chances are fair, good, or pretty much guaranteed lol. Keep in mind that constructive criticism is always welcome haha
Looks like you already have the Cap One Journey so with a score like yours (which is very decent for a student) I would say that given your AAoA is less than a year, I would say that you can try for Citi Forward/Dividend and Discover More. You already have a card so chances of them rejecting your application should be pretty low.

Hey WallyxD! Welcome to the forums!
First, if you can afford it, I would recommend subscribing to ScoreWatch here so that you can get a real FICO. FAKOS are all over the place and really unreliable. Without looking at your actual report, it is hard to recommend any specific cards. Seems with your inqs, you have apped quite a few cards with not so good results. ![]()
Do you have any baddies? If so, what kind?
If you have no baddies, then I would recommend persuing any of the student cards offered by the big banks: Discover and Citi come to mind. I think it might be a good thing for you to acquire a Walmart Card too so that you have a free TU FICO as well. Your FAKO scores are marginal for that card.
Being that you are building credit, you will have to take some inqs to get your foot in the door. In the future, please really think out your plan for where you want to be 2 - 3 and 5 years down the road credit wise and start limiting your apps to the credit profile you are looking for.
But, here's my recommendations as a student:
If you can get a relative to add you as a AU, I'd do it as long as the card has a low utility and no baddies and a relatively long history. If you can do this, wait 2 months and app Chase Freedom or Chase Amazon or any student card.
2. If you have access to a CU, speak to a loan officer with Credit Report in hand and ask what the likelihood of approval would be with a CU offered CC
3. If you can not do this or don't have access to a family member willing to do this and you don't have access to a CU, then:
Citi Forward (student version)
Discover IT (student version)
Walmart Card
All these cards are iffy and the big banks are fickle in their approvals of these cards.
I would garden these if approved and not app for a good year.
Hope this helps. ![]()
I'm actually pretty similar to you; 19, fulltime student, low income, short history. I say you have a good chance for either Discover it or citi forward. Don't even apply to chase unless you have a year of history and two or more accounts.
It's official, I'm done for a while. I applied for the Discover It for Students and got denied. The reasons were 1.) Number of inquiries in the past 24 months. 2.) Insufficient history for bank revolving trades. 3.) Number of inquiries in the past 6 months.
Right before I finished filling out the application, I said to the chat representative that I was worried about them pulling TU because I had a lot of inquiries on that report, and just my luck, I submitted it and they did pull TU.
I wasn't even going to bothering trying to get them to recon because they'll probably tell me the same thing PNC told me..
but just like with PNC, I have concerns with my denial reasons.
In the past 24 months, I had 13 inquiries on TU, but 9 will fall off this summer. So I don't see why if after a year inquiries no longer affect your score, why they're still looked at in determining whether or not someone is approved. As far as the insufficient history goes, I thought that was kinda the point of a student card, and in the past 6 months, I only had 2 inquries.. so I have absolutely no idea what that was about..
Should I try calling them? How is Discover with recons?
You should still call for a recon and ask if they could approve it with like a 500 CL. Either way it wont hurt you to try and at least you can tell yourself you try your best.

Interesting! I thought that there was recent agreement here that issuers only cared about the last 12 months (even though we know they are on the credit report for 24 months). So it looks like at least one does care.

I called, the guy was nice, but he said what really hurt me was that I just opened two cards. (One in early December and one in late September). I explained to him about the 'many inquiries' in the last 24 and in the last 6 months, but it seemed like that didn't matter.. though again, I only had two inquiries in the last 6 months and 9/13 were falling off this summer. But I asked about the 500 CL, but he said he can't overturn the decision.. ![]()

I'm getting confused in my old age; I thought the commonly held answer was it depends on lender and possibly even borrower too. I suspect most only care about 12, but anything on the credit report is fair game and presumably they've run metrics againt their portfolio performance based on this number at some point.
Wally was that the first reason listed? i.e. is your list in the same order as theirs? #2 I sort of get as the traditional underwriting criteria has been one year on a revolving tradeline, but if that order is legit, I'm rather surprised #1 is there vs. #3 in terms of the ranking.

Hmmm....its really weird because I have like 12 inquires in like the past year and probably 4-5 the last 6 months. My AAoA is 5 months and my oldest account was 10 months old. They also pull transunion on me and my FICO TU score was 703.
