Hello,
I am reviewing some of my wifes credit accounts, and I've found this charge:
3.00$ Monthly Member Fee
So I emailed customer service, and this was their reply:
Thanks for contacting us about your Capital One account.
The current account terms on your account include a monthly membership
fee of $3.00, which will be billed on December 2010. This fee is
assessed on the statement cycle date of each month. This fee is due even
if you do not use your card. The monthly membership fee is charged in
order to offset costs associated with your account, such as zero fraud
liability, 24/7 customer service, and the special products and services
we offer.
If you have any questions, please give us a call at 1-800-955-7070. Our
Customer Service Representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week.
Sincerely,
Capital One
So here is my question, the 3.00$ a month charge seems like something I can opt out of, but this response back makes it look like this is just a fee to have the right to have this card, any thoughts? I understand a yearly membership fee for cards that have great miles/cash rewards. But this is a standard card..that offers zero liability and 24/7 customer service, that is not worth 3.00$
I am just trying to clean this up as the wife does not use her credit cards much..and we have come very close in missing making the payment (On the 3.00$ fee).
This is simply an annual fee on your account that they are charging you monthly, instead of $36 at one time. You can call customer service and threaten to cancel your card to see if they will take the fee off, but be careful because they may just close the card as you request.
Never hurts to give them a call and at least ask if it can be waived.
Ugh this sucks. We don't want to close this card, but a card with annual fee that doesn't have great cashback/rewards program?
