New AMEX? - AMEX Explorer?!

Does anybody have or know any details about the AMEX Explorer card? I've read offers of 100k MR points for only $1,500 spend. Apparently it's only offered to Australian citizens?

Any info would be appreciated!

Re: New AMEX? - AMEX Explorer?!

Seems odd that Amex would choose the name Explorer for an Australian card when that name is already in use on the Chase/United Airlines co-branded card in the US.

It's on the Amex AU site now. https://m.americanexpress.com/au/content/all-cards/?inav=au_menu_cards_pc_view_mob#au#the-american-e...

The bonus is just as you said, and earnings are "Earn 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on purchases except government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 points per $1 spent". Not sure how the AF, MR, SUB all translate with USD, but the card exists.

That link is to the Australian Amex site, not the U.S.  This card and a lot of others on that site are not offered to US reisdents, and probably never will be.  As we generally don't discuss cards issued in other countries, not sure we need to continue to here.

Makes sense. I was hoping someone had info about it on the US side. But alas, if it's only in AU, then you're right and this conversation is pretty much done. Thanks for the info!

What keeps credit markets from other countires out of the US market? Banking laws?

Just curious......

You can of course use a foreign credit card here and vice versa, but can't necessarilly get one.  Sometimes it is just the issuer.   Nothing would prevent Amex releasing an equivalent card  to US residents if they so chose.   But local considerations (such as the CARD act here, caps on APR in other places etc) means that what may make sense in one market won't be profitable in another.  And in some cases a bank may not be able to offer credit services in a particular country

The card does look pretty good, but keep in mind that Australian merchants often charge extra fees to take CCs. Recent legislation limits the fees on some cards, but apparently an exception exists for Amex-issued cards and a few others like Diners Club, and they can remain high. So that digs into the 2 MRs/1 AUD earn rate.

Also, the transfer partners and ratios are more limited. 100k Australian MRs still can go a long way, though.

I don't see annual spend requirements for the cards. The income requirements aren't excessive.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Every bank product, whether it be deposit accounts or credit products, has to be in a specific currency. It wouldn't make much sense to get an Australian credit card that issues credit in AUD and has to be paid in AUD if you live in the US and spend the money here.  You'd have to keep constant track of the exchange rate to figure out how much you're actually spending and how much you actually owe, either of which could drastically change at a moment's notice because of trade relations, international incidents, etc. So banks don't offer it.

I get a kick out of looking at Amex card products in other markets.

That Explorer card looks fantastic.  Some really nice perks, as well.

Also funny that their basic charge card looks like our old Zync card.
