Hey everybody, just a brief question. Had my discover chrome card for years, one of my first ones in college.
I have not used the card much in the past which has led to less cli than other cards. But would like to request one and get the card near the $10k mark.
current I have a 0% apr and have a $5k balance out of my $6k.
Is it a general good rule to pay statement balance before requesting or has anyone received a cli without doing so ?

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't feel real confident in having any success getting a CLI from Discover while carrying 80%+ utilization. But, if the rest of your accounts have low, to no reported usage and you have really good, to excellent scores, then maybe there's a chance. I would think your chances are greater however, if you pay that balance down, way down.
Moving to credit cards
For a no harm, no HP CLI, I'd give it a spin for free....
Discover for over 8 years and it's the second slowest to grow card.
Cap 1 CLI is the no CLI / dead card in my drawer.

No need to pay the statement balance in full. However, your odds of a decent CLI will improve if you paydown the card below 49% UT - imo.
You can request a soft pull CLI on-line with Discover. When I requested them, there was no field to enter a specific amount. The system just responded with a CLI offer of x dollars. Then, if someone wanted more than offered, a desired amount could be submitted. However, it would trigger a hard pull.
I only did SP CLI requests and waited 6 months between submissions. If you choose to try a SP CLI, let us know what happens.
Thank you I agree, only card I have revolving right now out of total limits of about 120k. But I do usually request on low utilization.
wanted to collect opinions tho because I do have 0 apr promo so don't want to pay yet. It's chillin in the Hysa for the interest gain lol

Thanks! Appreciate the info
yeah discover is definitely one of my slower building accounts and I feel they are more usage based. Also like the other member mentioned cap1 is the worst for me never growing lol

Aye, gave it a shot just now they approved an additional $3k to from $6200 to $9200
So seems that in this case worked out
appreciate the input from all of you!

I spent a lot of time requesting after statement close and after I paid in full with no luck. But lately, I've requested a week or so before statement close WITH a balance and received +$3000 twice. My working hypothesis is that Discover likes a balance when you request.
These were not back to back. First with a couple months reporting a balance, requested increase with current balance (+$3k), then let another statement close with a balance, then requested with a current balance about a week before statement close. (hope that makes sense)
This year, after 4 years with the card, I more than doubled my limit. 4500->6500->9500->12500
Super helpful, thank you! I will keep in mind as I try to grow this card further
