No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
Tried using the debit card to pay for gas (via the ExxonMobile app). I got a receipt for the purchase, indicating that it had been charged to the debit card, but in the app it shows no activity on the card, the PP balance is unchanged, and none of the linked cards or banks shows the transaction.
So maybe it really is 100% off gas, or there is a delay, or (sadly possible) I missed something.

I did just that, and the "autopay" setting for PP is the bees knees mate.
Showed me all the merchants I have used PP with, and a few of them were set to use the DEBIT CARD and it was easy to change them to use the CREDIT CARD instead.
I would have had no idea that even existed had you not mentioned it.
PP should have it as a footnote in the main setting that you select to use another payment source instead of the PP balance/ debit card.
I think pretty much everyone would assume that it's a universal setting when it's actually not.
Thank you for reminding me of this. I last looked a couple of years ago.
Seems that when I applied for the "Paypal Debit Card" it reset some of the companies from my default CC to use the Debit card.
Personally I don't want any company to be set for Auto Pay. That is not how I use Paypal.
To find the "Automatic payments" settings in Paypal in a desktop browser.
Settings "Gear" icon top right
"Payment" tab/button middle top
"Automatic payments" bottom middle
So, I was trying to find more data points on what has worked for the Grocery category (ie, has it only worked on Supermarkets, or do the "misc groceries/markets/convenience stores" MCC also work) and I ended up in a Reddit thread.
So, unrelated-but-related, someone else mentioned a debit card that gives 5% on utilities, so I thought that worth bringing here: https://www.future.green/utilities

Two days later I got notification of the transaction, my PP balance decreased and I got the 5% rewards. For some reason I expected debit based transactions to be processed much quicker. So possibly room for a scam in there....

How so? Paypal has always been quirky on time. But I've never seen any scam in all the years I've used them.

I read that as "X days non-reporting time leaving you open to having been scammed by a bad actor and not knowing about it for days"

Oh, I guess people are much more honest than me then! I meant more like a version of check kiting, is it possible (for me) to charge against my say $1000 PP balance several times if debiting is that slow? Probably not, but still! But @Anonymous interpretation has some validity too
Good thing PayPal has protections against unauthorized purchases, including the debit card.

In my scenario, they would be authorized!
