I spent the $400 on the AMEX, but it never posted.

A similar PayPal situation happened with one of my AMEX cards with a $200 transaction.  It took 2.5 weeks for it to eventually show up.  Luckily, it wasn't a bonus-dependent transaction.  Oddly enough, the transaction date reflected as of when the purchase was made.

 

But as Ryanbush pointed out, in the event something quirky does happen, I would heed his advice to ensure you don't miss out on the bonus.
