Just got a HELOC and paid off almost $50k in credit card debt that I’ve been faithfully paying into for over 15 years. Amazing feeling, and now I’m breaking 800s! I can't even believe it!
I was so enthusiastic about not being in debt (other than the HELOC, of course), I made some dumb moves right away. I had a Chase Presidential Plus card that was just about due to charge the $450 AF, and so I called to say that I didn’t want to pay the AF (I don’t travel anywhere as much as I used to, and my AmexPlat serves me well.) I should have tried to do a PC, because the card was over 8 years old. (My oldest are 2 Amex at over 30 years and my average is between 8.5-9.8 years, depending on CRA.)
After doing some reading, I realized that I made a mistake and read about the possibility of opening just recently closed accounts, so I wrote to Chase via secure message to see if I could reopen with a PC, keeping the opening date and no HP. I was told that 30 days had passed, so no—but I was welcome to apply for another card.
Should I call to see if I can recon that decision? I was at something like 32 days past my call (and in fact, I didn’t say I wanted to close my account, I just said that I didn’t want to pay the AF)?
I also closed a Banana Republic Visa card with a high APR, which I should have just put in a drawer and an Ann Taylor card, for no reason at all. Dumb. I'll make up for it in Discover CLIs, I guess.
Shoudl I just leave it alone, or try to call Chase and work it out?
Thanks!
K
It's going to report for 10 more years after closure, so don't sweat it.
