I had not heard this before. Good to know. I like the idea of the EMV chip in every card. I like to have my information protected during each transaction. With all these data breaches..kinda scared to use my card! One of the reasons I switched from a "blink" Freedom card to a non-blink card.

The EMV chip doesn't do anything until all the retailers have EMV compatible terminals, and your information can still be at risk until the magnetic strip technology is eliminated.

Really? I thought the EMV scrabbled your data when used during each transaction so that it would be harder to hack. Retail stores still need to have EMV terminals in order for this to be effective? Chip is useless then..

A major advantage of the chip is that it is much harder to clone than a magnetic strip, which can currently be copied fairly easily, by a waiter or a clerk if they have you card for a short period of time.    For backward compatability, the cards still have magnetic stripes, but EMV POS devices don't allow the card to be swiped if they detect a chip (so at most Walmarts these days, you have to insert your card if it has a chip).   As the devices get more common (and as trumpet mentioned there is an incentive for merchants to adopt them) then mag stripes become useless at more and more places, and there is no gain in cloning them

Currently, a disproportional amount of global "card present" fraud occurs in the US, as card cloned abroad can easily be used here.

EMV chip enabled card readers are the ones you put in vertical´(so the chip goes into the reader), not swipe like normal ones, I read walmart will roll out their card readers for EMV chip ready.

Many walmarts already have them, and the clerks have been trained to explain what people need to do (as everyone at first swipes)

Kinda like freedom mastercards.... you can't avoid it. What a silly reason not to use a card...sigh..

I mean technically it's not the only reason why I don't use it. I use AMEX and I'd say there is only one place I frequest that doesn't take amex and I usually just use cash there (local deli). The card being "ugly" just makes it that much easier to use another as my 'backup'.

Re: Reverting from Chase Freedom EMV?

Sent a secure message asking Chase. I may have mentioned that I misplaced the card, and I got this :

"To prevent any fraudulent activity, we have closed your
account ending in **** and a card with a new account
number ending in **** has been issued. The new card will
not have and EMV chip, per your request..."

Woohoo! Until I'm forced to have one, I will cherish my non-EMV Freedom now.

Re: Reverting from Chase Freedom EMV?

I asked chase to send me an EMV freedom, they sent me two which are hideous but it has the same numbers back and front as the old freedom non emv, so no need to revert the card.

Good for you!  Too bad you didn't tell them, as an aside, that the chip card was ugly and you missed the Chase logo.  They might pass it along and redesign it.  You think these bankers know how their clients like the look of their cards?  Please!  They can use all the help they can get.  Do as I do, "help them" with their business every chance you get...

Why does that suck?  OP reported it lost, so they had to do that.   No impact on AAoA etc, just potentially some inconvenience if recurring payments were on the card.

The EMV Freedom is literally the worst looking card.

It's not literally the worst but that is literally your opinion.  Literally isn't equivalent to an exclamation mark despite how so many use it as such.  As others have pointed out even if you can revert you'll be forced to switch with the liability shift around the corner.

It's standard procedure for cards reported lost and the reason should be apparent.
