Let's say I go to walmart, pick up my prescriptions and pay for them at the regular check out with my groceries. Would the entire transaction fall under the grocery category so I can earn 3x cash back? Or would the system recognize only my actual grocery purchases for rewards purposes?
I never had to consider this before, but now that the "affordable" health care act kicks in next week I find myself having to shell out an extra $3,000 a year for medications. It would be nice to at least earn something back....
ty,
The entire transaction is encoded with the merchant category code for that location.
It doesn't matter what you buy. Just where you buy it.
PS: Citi Dividend Platinum Select credit card has 5% totating categories. First quarter of 2014 includes Drug Stores.

I wonder if the pharmacy in Walmart is coded differently than Walmart itself.
That's what I'm wondering. Sounds too good to be true that I can by a big screen TV from walmart, and it's going to qualify for a grocery purchase for rewards purposes.

It depends.
Some super walmarts are coded as Grocery stores, some walmarts are coded as Discount stores. Some walmarts have a clinic that is coded as Health & Medical Services/Supplies. etc.
Wells Fargo Cash Rewards Visa has 5% cash back on groceries, drugstores and gas purchases for the first 6-months and there isn't a cap. No annual fee. My DH currently has the card and when the initial 6 months are up, I'm going to apply so we can another 6-months.
A way to get 2% cash back year-round on drugstore purchases is to get the US Bank Cash+ Visa. There's no limit on the 2% rewards either. Not as good as 5%, but it's better than 1%.

IF you can get a Huntington voice card, you can select 3% CB on Pharmacy.
