AMEX Platinum is not even the best card that AMEX offers let along other companies. If they simply offered 3X on ALL purchases and include superior bonus categories it would vault this card back into the limelight. Also, up your presentation. Your platinum card looks and feels cheap. It's all about the benefits. Right now even at 100K bonus, this is a get it for the bonus card if even that.

That is a huge overstatement.  The Platinum is the best Amex card for a lot of people that travel..  Just because it doesnt fit your needs doesnt make it so for everyone else.

It works for me. I can use a number of Delta lounges and the SFO Centurion. Priority Pass lounges are far less convenient for my travels, and I wonder why CSR fans get so enthusiastic about them.

I actually will book flights on a different card, though.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Because Priority Pass lounges are better than nothing - and for an additional $55 AF (once you factor in the $300 travel credit) over the CSP - the Priority Pass lounges become a pretty good deal.  I will say the one in DFW was nothing to write home about - but was better than nothing.  I'd personally love to have an Amex Platinum if I was single - but being married means I would need an AU card as well and once you add the AU fee for us the much better lounges aren't worth the extra amount of AFs we would pay for the little amount of travel we do every year.

I do agree that it looks and feels cheap, but it's still not a bad looking card. Should be made out of metal though at $450 a year, just like the Citi Prestige should be.

If one only travels a couple of times a year, the PRG is probably a better option.

If you want to impress other people with your cards, getting them into airport lounges and saving them money through price rewind (taking their cash, using your card) is far more effective than having a piece of metal in your wallet.

At least that's been my experience...

Re: Rumor: Amex to compete with CSR

Im continually amazed at how many people worry about the material of their card on here haha. My sapphire reserve is plastic and the money spends just the same as the metal ones I'm quite sure. It just feels like the mind set of people who buy 30 year old Ferraris that cost less than a new Toyota camry just so they can say they have a Ferrari.

But at the end of the day I'm all for an Amex version of the CSR. I would gladly upgrade/change my platinum to a new card that offered the mix of travel perks and rewards, especially if it had a 100k sign up bonus as well.

Amex Platinum NPSL I Chase Sapphire Reserve 78K I Chase Freedom U 55k I JP Morgan Ritz 50k I B OF A Cash Rewards 50k I Barclay Black Luxury 43,750 I Capital One QuickSilver 40K I Amex BCP 34k I Amex Optima Platinum 30k I Barclays Arrival+ World E 29k I Merril+ 27,800 I Lowes 25k I Pen Fed PR Visa Sig 20K I Home Depot 17k I NFCU Cash Rewards 8k

Amex Biz Platinum NPSL I Lowes Business 42k I Amex Simply Cash + $22,500 I Chase Ink 21K I B of A World Points $20,500 I B of A Bus MasterCard 16k I Amex SPG 3K.

I hope they improve the existing Platinum.

I'd like to see some/all of:

1. At least one free guest at Delta SkyClubs

2. Travel insurance to rival Prestige/CSR/CSP

3. Allowing broader travel expenses for the $200 credit (with MPX, it's just become a circus that no one really wins in)

4. Bonus categories

Agreed... but I would like to get more than a $200 credit.  If they could increase it to $250-$300 that would be great!

Agreed. It should be $300 if you want to compete with C$R.

Regarding the material.. Yes it should be Metal. Why does a $95AF CSP feel and look better than a $450 "Platinum" Amex? Presentation MATTERS. In everything. Not just in cards. In ANY business. You want to look and be high end? PLAY THE ROLL!

Sorry /rant.

What exactly is "high end" about a few cents' worth of base metal?

Keep in mind that even the mighty Centurion's "anodized titanium" can be found in low/mid quality saucepans.

The Palladium has only a trace amount of palladium metal.

The Amex charge card is the most widely recognizable card design in the world. It doesn't need to bother with the gimmick of being metal.

Re: Rumor: Amex to compete with CSR

Personally I'm okay with plastic since my metal CSR's already pretty scratched up on top where it's swiped. Cat Surprised

Anyway, I'm leaning towards AmEx improving Platnium rather than them making a new card. Even adopting the same earnings structure as PRG would help a lot.

I have the king of all the metal cards, the Ritz and it's pretty scuffed up already (Visa Infinite version).
