I'm no expert on secured cards, but I'm pretty sure I've read on this forum about secured cards being shut down for no apparent reason. Just like regular cards! Maybe someone will chime in who's experienced that.

@Red1Blue I don't think so. You have to opt in and that probably means unthawing to do so...but just temporarily.  Today I did try opting in on my new PayPal credit acct. and Synch is down today.  Try tomorrow first, before unthawing.

I do not carry balance and If they shutdown I get the deposit back.  I guess any thing is possible and they can close the secured cards. It all depends on how one use the cards and how they maintain them. In my case at least I am not at the mercy of the card issuer and I dont have to worry about sudden card closure and cld and other AA that effects my Util and Available Credit. I know last year some of the card issuers have been brutal with closures and clds.

I'm sorry that happened to you. If it's any consolation, just keep in mind that you're one of MANY whose entire lineup of Synchrony cards got closed, for no apparent reason. They haven't pulled that on me--yet--but every time I read a[nother] thread like this, I brace myself for it.

I agree with another person who guessed that low usage was the 'reason' they closed the cards. Your utilization was very low--as is mine--and I've gleaned that they don't like that.

Losing $50,000+ in credit has got to be painful. But, on the bright side, you're done with Synchrony! Smiley Very Happy Consider that a blessing.

Why is it a blessing? They have some good cards. I use my PayPal and care credit all the time. At some point I'll get the Verizon card to help pay for upgrades. Car care is also another one I'm looking at. I've never had problems with them. But then again, I also don't have 70k of unused credit with them either.

Is this a rhetorical question? Smiley Happy

Yes, I agree, they definitely have some good cards--albeit with ridiculously high APRs--and I use some of mine a LOT. But that doesn't make Synchrony a good entity. Based just on what we see on this forum, i.e., mass closures for no apparent reason of perfectly good accounts, I'd think it's obvious why it's a blessing to be done with them. Knowing you're a good customer, always pay on time, never have any kind of account issues, and yet the shoe can drop at any moment and all your accounts can be closed....yeah, I'd say being done with that is a blessing. Your opinion may vary!

Hardly rhetorical. There are plenty of lenders who take AA or make decisions regardless of how you maintained your accounts with them.

Chase shuts down cards after approval despite nothing wrong, except they followed up a few weeks later and saw other new cards at the same time. They've shut down all cards before. Amex puts hard limits on their charge cards and may freeze all accounts until they get access to taxes despite always being a good customer. They've shut down all cards before. Citi takes preemptive AA based on handling of third party accounts. NFCU will base approvals and increases on how you handle third party accounts over the last 12 months regardless of relationship or how you handled first party accounts.

Based on the above, those lenders don't sound that great, but they get plenty of praise on here. Just don't get the whole being happy with being done with synchrony thing. I didn't see any complaints while they were raising everyone's limits. Heck, until they started closing people's cards, they had less complaints than the other lenders I mentioned. Seems the only time there are complaints about them was when the blue envelopes went out and these mass closures. 🤷

All I know is what I've seen in the ~year since I came back here after a long break. I don't see endless posts about other banks arbitrarily shutting down perfectly good accounts. Sure, I see the *occasional* post about that, but not in droves!

Do these tend to come in waves or a "purge"?  Or are they purely random?  I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune...  I would be devastated!

Such is credit life on this site.

Synch gives an awesome CLI: "Synch ROCKS!!!"

Synch CLDs/closes for use inconsistent with the card limits: "Synch SUCKS!!!"

And look, losing cards from lenders like Synch may seem like a slap in the face...especially if your credit profile is solid. Maybe it is, but that same solid profile will leave the same person with terrific cards to fall back on. Once the initial sting wears off, credit life goes on.

Where I wish people would be more cautious (not necessarily in the case of the OP in this thread, just in general) is relative to rolling up fat lines with store cards to mask overall UTIL.

Playing that game is risky under the best of circumstances.

I had a relative get burned by that in a big, big way.

She was charging her preferred cards heavily and her scores were obviously not what they could have been. One day, she got the brilliant idea to open a ton of store cards with decent (but not great) limits...most with Comenity and Synch. Her overall UTIL, of course, dropped...and because she had old student loans reporting, her AAoA wasn't as damaged as one might think.

Well, as word of impending Fed rate hikes surfaced, she began to look to refi her mortgage. Unfortunately, she had barely used those store cards...and faster than you can say "check, please", all but two low-limit store cards were shut down. Because she hadn't paid down (but rather maxed out) the oft-used cards, her UTIL was sky-high and her fixed refi rate was actually a half-point HIGHER than her current rate, regardless of term. Now, she's scrambling to pay down those cards by any means necessary before mortgage/refi rates jump any higher.

I suppose the lesson here is to manage your overall CCC portfolio wisely so as to weather any credit storm relative to closures. And as always, buyer beware with Synch and Comenity. You can easily love and hate them...all in the same day.

Hi @GApeachy I did not understand. Did you say Discover closed the secured cards during the pandemic? Some cards issued by some of the companies are partial secured not completely secured.

Re: Since the Synchrony account closure thread appears closed ...

Synchrony evaluates from Chexsystem, FactorTrust, uses VS4 and sp's your cr's....and more. Whatever "more" is...

I've read where your field of work vs certain economic situations is taken into consideration as well. I've read a few of their white papers, posted one of them on the closed synchrony closure thread.

Too much to truely pinpoint individual reasons of closure but I find it interesting that peeps here have gotten back in with Synchrony in a matter of months after major loss of credit.

Synchrony isn't taking $ away but securing their $/reserves at that point in time from DPS they receive at that point and time.

Yes, there were 4506-c requests sent out to secured card holders. Some were closed due to non-compliance and some closed due to not receiving info from IRS in time and some self-closed cuz the OP said "bite me".
