Store Card Question

Yet another question I have purely out of curiousity.  A lot of stores offer some kind of discount on your first purchase if you sign up for their card.  What do these stores do if your application gets denied but they have already given you the discount?  Do they go back and apply the discounted amount to your debit/credit card?  What if you paid in cash?

They will only give you the discount if you apply and are approved, in the case that you are approved, you have to pay with the new card to get the discount, otherwise no discount.

So the cashier gets an instant approval/denial?

usually or instead of saying you were denied they will tell you that you will receive a letter from them in 7-10 business days lol and then pay with another payment method
