Re: Suggestions on AX

Look at the BCE with no annual fee and the Cash Magnet card.  I have both and love them!

I really want a American Express card , but every time I go to the pre qualify page it never offers me anything. My TU- 708, Eq- 705 & Ex- 703. My utilization is 4% and HI are 5. I want the card but don’t want the hard pull unless I have a good chance of being approved. I just can’t get pass the pre quality .I was approved for a BOA a couple months back .
Any thoughts !

Why do you really want an American Express card?  You mention that you want a travel or rewards card for your weekly shopping.  What kind of shopping and what us your monthly spend on credit cards in categories like groceries, dining, travel, etc?  American Express has a lot of great cards but so does Chase and other creditors.  Please familiarize yourself very well with their various cards and their rewards program before applying for one of their cards.  Otherwise you may well end up with a credit card that is basically useless for your needs.  Their is nothing special about Amex cards over other credit cards and no need to have one just to say you have an Amex.  Far too many people apply for their cards like the Delta Gold (not referring to anyone in this thread) just because it’s an Amex and supposedly (and not true) that it’s their easiest card to get approved for and never fly on Delta.  They have some great cards and I have 8 myself but that doesn’t mean that everyone needs or should have an Amex.

Hey. I love them.  Like I said in my post, I have 8 cards from them.  Just think too many people apply for Amex cards just because they want a card from them and don’t do the appropriate research about the cards before applying. This is true for a lot of applications but I think we see it more with Amex cards because some posters think they get to belong to some secret club with out of the world benefits once they have an American Express credit card.

You bring up a great point. At $1 a point spend, it will cost me $35k to earn a trip to Arizona in comfort+. The free trip would cause me to have to transfer once and give me a 3+ hour travel time, versus Southwest which is about $160 out of pocket with a 1 hour direct flight. Kind of regret the Delta card now.

OP: I wasn't pre-approved and my profile is worse than yours. Instant approval for the Delta. Which means I would have probably been approved for the Hilton and SPG also. Hopefully I can do the Everyday next.

I would agree but I would add that behavior is at times encouraged by people recommending the “easiest” AMEX card.

People pick up cards for a variety of reasons and hopefully selects a card that matches their spending habits. That said, I don’t think  AMEX advice has to be complicated.

1. What is their preferred ecosystem (Hilton or SPG, Delta, MRs for travel flexibility , or cashback)?

2. With a targeted card determined, does the persons profile match (recent) approvals DPs?

Preapprovals make that assessment easiest.

Without preapprovals, if comparables are available and income and profile are good, people should apply. If the person cannot find comparable profiles that received an AMEX approval, waiting until their profile improves is a better choice than going for an “easy” but unneeded card (IMHO).

Re: Suggestions on AX

.....Prequalify ????    Well I guess its solid if it tells you that you are approved but not solid if it says that your aren't qualified at this time. Let me explain.. I would check monthly to see if I was prequalified and it always told me that I was not. However after reading lots of different posts here on this forum i decided to try my luck anyway. I now have 4 amex cards, 1 Platnium Business charge card and the Everyday Business card. I also have they Everyday Card for personal and Gold Charge for personal. I got the 2 personal cards first and 3-4 days later I got the ones for my Buisness.

So I think that if your credit is over 670 and your utlilization is good on your reports and don't have bad things on report you should be ok to try. I have lots on inquires and 2 paid charge off and still got it.

Best of Luck
