Too much available credit...Can I still apply for new cards?

I have a total of seven credit cards. Last year I bought a house I believe that will help to stabilize my credit foundation. With a fico score of 780 and recently denied by Chase. I appllied for Sapphire Preferred wasd denied due to too much available credit. My question is, can I still appy for new cards? or should I close some cards by merging the CL to same bank. Perhaps best advise stick with what I have.

Citi Thank you preferred $14,800

Citi simplicity $8,200

AMEX BCE $40,000

AMEX delta $4,600

CAP QUICKSILVER $10,000

CAP VENTURE ONE $5000

DISCOVER IT $9,100

TOTAL $91,700

You could voluntarily lower credit limits for cards you already have.  Your American Express BCE seems like a good candidate, with its current $40,000 limit.

Credit Scores: (FICO 8) 846 Experian April 2024, 844 TransUnion March 2024 | (FICO 9) 849 Equifax April 2024
Credit Cards (newest to oldest): NFCU VISA Platinum $25,000 | BECU Cash Back VISA $10,000 | American Express BCE $9000 | Simmons Bank VISA $7500 | Capital One Quicksilver VISA Platinum (PC/upgrade from No Hassle Miles Rewards VISA Platinum) $500

I kind of doubt that is the real reason...91,700 is not a lot in credit limits. Many here have 250k+.....I don't think I would CLD any card in hopes that it would get approvals. Chase can be sort of fickle, and you might have been better off to try for the freedom as your first card with Chase. The CSP, and CSR are higher teir cards. They have to give a reason for denial, but I would not be surprised if the reason given was not the main reason for the denial. Sometimes the reasons given defy logic.

Re: Too much available credit...Can I still apply for new cards?

I hate to be nosy, but what is your income?  I have a theory that Chase takes income into consideration more than do some other lenders.  (PenFed is another lender that emphasizes income.)

Daily Carry: PenFed Power Cash • NFCU Flagship • NFCU More Rewards • Chase Freedom
Sock Drawer: PenFed Promise • NFCU cashRewards • Chase Sapphire Preferred • Chase Freedom Unlimited • United Explorer • UNFCU Azure

Re: Too much available credit...Can I still apply for new cards?

Are you under the 5/24 with Chase? I doubt your available credit is the real reason. These lenders will slap anything on the denial letter to stay within the laws.

There's no way I'd reduce my CLs for Chase or any other lender.

Re: Too much available credit...Can I still apply for new cards?

Just chiming in that I have nearly $600,000 in available revolving credit and have not been denied by Chase for that reason.  Unless your income is really low, that can't be the real reason.
