This is the second anniversary month for my USAA Secure Mastercard with $1500 CL. My scores have improved, I have a perfect credit report since BK discharge and many years with USAA.
I just closed my ripoff cards from First Premier and CreditOne, and will get utilization to about 20% reporting as of this week. I have two unsecured cards with NFCU with lines > 10K each, an overdraft line with NFCU again >10K, and BBRZMC, Kohls and Macys cards. So I don't "need" to keep USAA open.
I have to notify them not to roll over my savings account, and I'm prepared to close the card. Does anyone have any idea whether they'll unsecure the card?
They don't unsecure the card. You'd have to apply for a traditional unsecured CC product. Have you kept an eye on the "My Offers" tab? I check it religiously, but no dice so far. Usually if you get pre-approval on that tab, it's the closest thing to an actual pre-approval that you'll get.
Good luck and let us know what you decide. I think if we keep asking for these cards to unsecure, eventually they will. They have changed the secured card quite a bit since its inception based on customer feedback. Just be sure to let them know what you want.
Thanks, that's what I thought the worst case would be. I can afford the INQ, and in fact whether they unsecured or created a new account I'd expect a hard INQ. And I could afford to take the impact to AAOA if they don't date it back.
Regardless I'll keep USAA, it's hard to beat their unsurance, and they're easier to bank remotely with than NFCU.
