Re: Will lowering my credit limit hurt my FICO score?

I have credit score of 802, no debt and large amounts of available credit. Am divorced but still have one joint card that hasn't been used since divorce but has a $60,000 available balance. If I close it so I am no longer on a joint account with my ex is it going to effect my score much?

if you are joint, as you stated not just au on it, then most likely not (at least immediately). once the trade line ages off (7-10 years) if it was your oldest then it may.

i'm new at this though so let some veterans chime in with factors i'm not familiar with.

CLOSE THE CARD!

If you are nearing divorce and you are worried about her damaging you credit then you should absolutely close it and not just get the limit lowered. If she is a joint then she can just call the CCC and request to have the limit increased. You're going to want to get the card closed once you do divorce anyway.

Tell her to get a card in only her name.
