Will recurring payments automatically be rejected after closing credit card?

If you close a credit card but forget to change the payment method for a recurring subscription (say an annual one), will the charge still go through? After closing an account, do we need to be worried about it being reopened and then missing a payment?

If the account is closed, there is no way for charge to be processed if made after the closing.

If charge is pending when you close the account, it will post and you will need to pay it.

I guess there are always exceptions but I was always under the impression that once the card is closed then any additional authorizations would be declined.
