I was a car salesman for a short while many years ago. It was an eye opening experience to see what lengths buyers would go to get the new and shiny! The number of people that bought way more car than they could afford was unbelievable. Any little hiccup in their finances and they would be in trouble.
And just an FYI: Auto loans are easy to get as long as you have a decent down payment. The car is collateral for the loan and can be easily repossessed and sold to recover most of the lender's money. If you have trouble being approved for an auto loan, your finances are in really bad shape and that should serve as a wake up call.
I learned my lesson then, always buy used and never judge a person by the type of car that they drive.
