I have 3 so I guess that makes me below average. Smiley Happy  I've never had more than 3 total at one time, ever.  For many years I only had 2, or even 1.

 

I could have had 4 but I closed one last year before apping for my newest.

 

At my income/spend level too many cards would spread things too thin, rewards dilution, that sort of thing.  Plus having to keep track of payments/due dates/statement cut dates.

 

3 works well for me.  Maybe in a few years I'll have 4, or maybe I won't.

I'm definitely not average but slightly below-average for MFF standards. My original goal to maintain 5-6 cards but failed with the advent of chasing CB, points, and 0% offers.
