But so far they're the only one - Safeway has the chip enabled terminals, but when I tried to insert my chip card nothing happened, they cashier said she was told it would be the 1st of the year before the software is in place..
Same here at Dollar Tree - if you have a chip card and you swipe, it tells you to use the chip.
I'd say about 50% of the local merchants I shop at have upgraded to new terminals. All of them are the exact same Verifone handheld model, which makes me think one of the CC processors around here is leasing them or giving them away in order to sign up new clients and get interchange rates.
Taco Bell is a notable standout to me, they have not upgraded. I can't think of any other major chains that did not upgrade though.

Not mine unfortunately. Maybe it's still being rolled out?
All the stores i have shopped at this week don't have it, those stores include cvs, costco, and few different restaurants.
Dumb question, any security difference between using the swipe and chip and sig? I understand the Chip and pin is the most secure but what about chip and sig vs a swipe? Thanks.

The chip itself is what provides most of the security by generating one-time codes for every transaction. Signature/PIN is simply a layer on top of that.

Thank you, that helps.
I have a side question if anyone knows.. I've been recently getting all my replacement cards with the chips.. On my Barclay Reward and Sallie Mae I was able to choose a pin on their website. But I also have new chip cards for Chase Freedom, and CSP but I have no pins.I don't remember creating them..how to I get/change the pin for those cards? Thanks.

I recall that barclays had chip and pin on arrival so they may be only CCC offering chip and pin that is why you were able to set pin. All the EMV chipped cards i have don't offer chip and pin, is chip and sign on all my chase citi, and amex cards

I actually just called Chase, their auto number and requested a pin for both cards. I should get them in a week and can call back to change them. I assume the pin they send is for chip and pin, eh? Thank you.

It'll probably just be for cash advances.

Probably more like it, thanks. I'm curious why the other CCC don't offer the pin?
