Hebei court unveils program to expose deadbeat debtors

Deadbeat debtors in North China's Hebei province will find it more difficult to abscond as the Higher People's Court of Hebei on Monday introduced a mini-program on WeChat targeting them.

Called "a map of deadbeat debtors", the program allows users to find out whether there are any debtors within 500 meters.

The debtor's information is available to check in the program, making it easier for people to whistle-blow on debtors capable of paying their debts.

"It's a part of our measures to enforce our rulings and create a socially credible environment," said a spokesman of the court.

We should do a trial run of that here in the United States, but only with elected officials.

With credit score above their head on the map.

Big brother kinda thing but at the same time, public shaming from peers, when the person can pay that is, may be a good thing by encouraging them to pay their obligations. The problem I see is if the person cannot pay for whatever reason.

Knowingly or not, elected politicians truly do represent their constituents. That is, don't limit this to officials when there's plenty of even worse deadbeats, liars, and other - as a certain Jedi once put it - "scum and villany" right here among our fellow citizens. I'd wager a majority of the people railing against politicians for doing X or spending irresponsibly do X and spend irresponsibly themselves.

If we want to see what the truth looks like, let's start pulling back the curtains in our own backyards first.

But is this not why we elect representatives to look out for our best interests? Its not like they don't get paid well enough to do the job they are hired to do...

Not going deeper into politics here, but the reality today does not align with the intended ideal you state. It may well be that we need some self-reflection as a nation to see that our voting habits as they stand do not generate the desired results.

So much! lol.

Idealized society and reality are two very different things indeed.

Honestly I am against any form of system that makes debts a person has public... These things are always a slippery slope that end up at... well, China.

Yikes. This has the real potential to go so wrong so fast in so many ways.

I agree with the general sentiment that 'we get the government we deserve', but those people you are referring to are not voting on appropriations of a $4 trillion budget.

Just talking federally, I'd like to see how many of the 535 members of Congress practice what they preach.
