I am pretty sure that even though he said "I have a CC with Chase" he meant he "had" one, and it's now closed

So, he can't catch up like that as he's not just past due anymore.
I would try what you were saying if it wasn't for $18k though as this is exactly the way to be thinking when you are trying to save yourself from dealing with a CA when a debt is not yet sold!
