I know this is one of those issues that has already been written about in the past and pops up from time to time on MyFICO, but I wanted to write specifically about this instance because of how impactful it is for me and how worried I am about what the proper next action should be. To try to sum up as briefly as possible, I have been trying for months to reduce my credit card balances for a home loan approval. I had one card left to pay off, but it was a fairly high balance so I had to save as much as I could throughout an entire month to cobble together the payment. I pulled it off and got the card to zero, and I patted myself on the back and eagerly awaited the refresh of my scores on Credit Karma. Trans Union came in first, and all was well, then I waited for Equifax to update. And waited. And waited.
As the days progressed (it's now been over a week), Equifax updated other cards and accounts, but nothing on this card. I called my card issuer, and they assured me that they had reported to all three bureaus as always. I began hoping against hope that the mistake was Credit Karma's. But then I subscribed to Equifax.com to check the actual Equifax report, and I saw that much to my fury and frustration, it does appear to be an Equifax problem. All of my other cards that were already low balances have their payments reported as usual, but for this card, it's as if a time warp opened up and an entire month disappeared and was swallowed up. No payment is reported, and the remaining balance is still the high amount that I had worked so hard to pay off.
I know the chorus here will likely be "file a dispute," but I'm scared because of what I've read about how that can hurt an account. I'm also wondering how long it will take to resolve and had been planning to make an offer on a home in the next week or two - and my current pre-approval is about to expire! Again, I can't express how devastating and incredibly ironic this is. I feel like I'd have had a better chance of being struck by lightning and it might be only slightly less unpleasant. I have always hated Equifax and even referred to it in casual friend conversations as "Equi-suck" but this gives new meaning to the term.
Any advice is welcome and greatly appreciated!
Welcome @desertredbird
Try looking at your real credit report on annualcreditreport.com. See if it posted there. If it did. print it out and send it in to EQ as a dispute. Balances wont hurt a score with an update. Lates and baddies do.
Thank you @FireMedic1! One question, though. I am enrolled already at Equifax.com, and the report I viewed with the missing payment was from that site (Equifax's own site): Will the report from annualcreditreport.com be any different than that? Believe me, I would not trust Credit Karma alone, but this is why I checked Equifax.com to see what the real (I presumed) report showed.
LOL! I dont trust EQ. Best to double check than single check. Ya never know until you try. Its free and doesnt cost a thing. Just a few minutes of your time.
The credit report from Equifax via annualcreditreport.com is indeed not the same as what you get from myequifax.com.
It includes more info, like soft inquiries. You can request a free report from each bureau up to 1 per week until at least the end of 2022.
Edited above, as I went into my my own myequifax acct. (free version) and saw that I didn't remember things correctly Myequifax DOES show soft inquiries. Sorry about that!
Still though, the acct. I have w/myequifax doesn't update regularly, so I find the ACR reports more useful as they are "near" real-time (.....usually!)
Just FYI, I have an account that also is not updating on Equifax for some reason since last month. It's well publicized they are having "issues" though, so I'm hoping it all balances out correctly soon.
