Collection from private college

I am desperately trying to clean up my credit - however, one of the BIG negatives on my account is from a local private college.  The end of 2002 I enrolled in an accelerated degree program which I should have graduated in Oct. of 2003.  Unfortunately a series of events pulled the rug out from under me the summer of 2003... my sis was dx w/leukemia and not expected to live (Woo-hoo! She's in remission!), I lost my job including my laptop which had the beginning of my graduation project, also lost my health insurance (I was dx with ADHD in March & w/o ins. had to quit my meds cold turkey - NOT recommended), and my dumb**bleep** BF at the time TOTALED my car.

I met with my advisor, the degree program admin & someone in the admissions office and laid my sob story out on the line and told them under the circumstances I couldn't continue.  At the time, they seemed to understand and I left thinking everything was done.  I didn't know that they were going to turn me in for collection for that last chunk of tuition.

About 1-1/2 yrs ago, I was contacted by a CA - I told them I withdrew from the program and was not responsible for this payment.  The "proof" they sent was my transcript.  The classes they want me to pay for, do not show up on my transcript as withdrawn or incomplete.  I relayed this info via phone and never heard from them again.  Now its been sold to another CA.

Should I try to resolve this with the college or is it too late?  I would like to go back & finish my degree, BUT, if I have to pay the collection PLUS the tuition again, they are CRAZY!  I would like to have college through the CA dismiss this and when I go back pay to finish my degree I would be willing to pay the CURRENT, MORE EXPENSIVE tuition, because if I pay the collection now, I"m sure they won't let me take the last set of classes at no additional charge.  Anyone have any ideas on how I should start?

Wish I would have found this site years ago!  Smiley Happy

Re: Collection from private college

If I were in your shoes, and I could pay for the classes AND I wanted to finish the program, I would:

Go talk to the bursars office, tell them what you want to do, that you can pay for the classes and is there some deal they could make to help you through?

Problem is colleges fill classes with a certain number of people that will make money for them, if people don't pay their expense goes on, so they still have to cover their costs (collection).

If you go in person and show good faith they will probably work something out with you.

Of course this is just my opinion and YMMV.
