Credit Repair Companies

Does anyone have any advice on credit repair companies that you hire for a monthly fee to fix your credit report?

I heard those companies are either scam, or they hook you up with some random people who have a good credit score. Of course I'm a newbie so maybe someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.
